The Journey

We are excited to be delivering a special cruise to welcome Australia’s new icebreaker to Hobart.  It was sad to goodbye to Aurora Australis.  The bright orange ship was an iconic fixture on the Hobart waterfront for over 30 years but we look forward to RSV Nuyina picking up the mantle.

Over the next few decades, RSV Nuyina will be the central platform for Australia’s scientific research in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. The ship is designed to be a flexible ‘super lab’ supporting biological, oceanographic, sea ice, geological and atmospheric sciences.

RSV Nuyina departed Vlissingen in the Netherlands on 31 August.  During its 24,000 km delivery voyage, it will pass the coast of West Africa, across the equator, around the Cape of Good Hope, before reaching Hobart.  After such a long voyage, the vessel deserves a hearty Hobart welcome and we are looking forward to giving her a yellow boat escort into town.

We will depart Hobart and cruise down the River Derwent to meet the vessel, travelling into Storm Bay before accompanying it into Hobart.  Our open air custom-built boat will ensure we get up close and personal to RSV Nuyina, giving guests a bird’s eye view of the awesome ship.

During our coastal wilderness cruise we will explore the stunning River Derwent coastline, including the Iron Pot Lighthouse the iconic turning point for the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race as we enter Storm Bay.
