The money is used to fund a local planting project in the upper Derwent catchment area.

Planting along the river corridors of the upper Derwent will:

  • Help the long term health of the Derwent Estuary of which Bruny Island is part
  • Assist key species such as the spotted handfish which act as a natural filter, by reducing sediment loads in the estuary and creating healthier habitats for all species in the Derwent River and surrounds
  • Assist ecologically vulnerable systems combat climate change
  • Assist threatened forest communities
  • Help restore and repair the critically important habitats of 92 threatened species such as the spotted handfish, ptunnarra brown butterfly, green and gold frogs and the great crested grebe
